I am teaching a plein air painting class at the Family Vacation Center on the campus. I set up easels between the beach and the lagoon. I provide all the materials and easels so they just walk out from the dorm they are staying in. It has been a great experience because everyone that signs up has never painted outside in this way before. Most have never painted at all. My goal of the class is for each student to complete a small 5 x 7 painting in the 2 hours. I show them how to manage the wetness of oil paint, how to use their rag and the mineral spirits. I then walk them through each step of my process, starting with sketching it out on paper to making the thicker finishing strokes. Everyone creates a painting that is an honest account of their personality, natural ability and this awesome experience of painting outside watching nature unfold. I just have to make sure I don't ruin it by talking too much...
I was one of the lucky people who took Chirs' class at the FVC. I not only created an extraordinary painting that is a beautiful representation of a magical place and time, but it has also inspired me to regularly stop and look at the wonders around me in my every day life. THANK YOU!!!
