"The Layer", view from Tunnel Road, Santa Barbara

I arose around 5 am, made coffee, prepared my painting bag and headed out before sunrise. I needed a painting to enter into the Santa Barbara Artwalk indoor show. I had to have the painting framed and at the Natural History Museum by noon that day. We had been having that thick marine layer that would hang over the city until about noon so I figured I could capture that, as long as I got high enough. I didn't  have enough time to go up to Camino Cielo so I decided I would head for Mission Canyon and Tunnel Road. I was hiking up Tunnel Road about 20 min before sunrise. I turned around and was greeted by this amazing view. Just as planned "The Layer" stayed around for several hours as the Sun's rays danced across our foothills. I was finishing up right around 10:30 am, hiked the piece down to the car and off to the Santa Barbara Frame & Gallery. I was just in there the day before so I knew there where a few to choose from. I got it all framed and raced over to the jury to turn it in by 11:30. And in the end it made the cut, so I was on display for the weekend at the show. Not to mention I got to hang out with a bunch of my heroes from the Oak Group at the reception. And my painting got to hang with theirs too.
