The last time this famous whaling ship went to sea was in 1927 I believe. Shortly after I made this painting they sent it out of the mystic harbor almost completely restored. Click here for the story...
and here is my story from that evening: I decided to get a hotel in Mystic on my drive from Portland, ME. There is an amazing seaport with several old ships and cute views. I found a little grass area next to the port, protected from wind with views of the historic boats. It was the perfect spot to set up with an hour left of sunlight. It was also next to a bunch of good ole boys BBQing and smoking cigars. They befriended me right away and invited me in for a glass of with wine and a sausage sandwich. I brought in this little gem and they snatched up. After getting to know them over a second glass of wine, I went out and painted 3 more little ones. It was well after dark before I finished and was getting a little tipsy so I'm not sure how they turned out. It was a great random night on my adventure. Things like this give me hope in the human spirit. We all share this planet and it can be so much fun if we choose to make it that way
