"Cottonwood Camp", Sisquoc River, San Rafael Wilderness, Santa Barbara, California. Acrylic on panel, 8 x 8 inches, $450.
The feeling of hiking 11 miles through rugged terrain on an over grown trail down to a shady camp with a bubbling stream cannot be rivaled. Nature lives on in our backcountry!
This feeling turned to one of despair as a significant thunder storm rolled through, thunder, lightning, and dropping 3 inches of rain in a 2 hour period just before evening. I like to sleep outside so I don;t bring a tent on these missions. Neither a rain jacket or two pairs of pants. After an hour of rain I was soaked completely through and we decided we better work on a shelter for the evening. Just as we finished our very danky, crude tarp shelter under that oak in the painting, the rain stopped. Luckily we had preserved our backpacks and sleeping bags under the tarps and managed to keep a small fire going through the storm. After standing around in our underwear drying off, we ended up having a perfect star filled night.
